This school year, Sturgeon Composite High School has introduced an innovative and exciting program for students with a passion for aviation. The new Aviation - Flight 15 course, offered under the Aviation and Tourism stream, provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to explore the fundamentals of flight and the aviation industry.
A Curriculum That Takes Students Higher
The Aviation - Flight courses are designed to align with Transport Canada standards, ensuring students receive real-world, practical knowledge. Throughout the course, students are immersed in comprehensive learning experiences that include understanding aviation theory, critical thinking, and problem-solving in a flight simulator setting. The program aims to give students a head start in pursuing careers as pilots or in other aviation-related fields.
Students who enroll in Aviation - Flight 15 can earn up to 5 credits: 3 credits from the core course, Aviation - Flight 15 (LDC1351), and an additional 2 credits from electives selected by the instructor. Elective options include:
The Tourism Sector (TOU1010)
Air Transportation (TOU3080)
Structured Programming 1 (CSE1110)
Robotics 1 (CSE1240)
CSE Project A (CSE1910)
Wilderness Navigation (WLD1060)
Mechanics Modes and Mechanisms (MEC1010)
First Aid/CPR (HCS2020)
This wide range of elective choices allows students to customize their learning experience and develop a diverse set of skills applicable to both aviation and related industries.
Students Took to the Skies!
The highlight of the program so far came on October 19, when Aviation - Flight 15 students partnered with Centennial Flight Centre at Villeneuve Airport for a thrilling Discovery Flight event. During this hands-on experience, students had the unique opportunity to take to the skies alongside experienced flight instructors. For many, it was their first time in a small aircraft, and the experience left a lasting impression.
The Discovery Flight event was more than just an exciting day out; it was a practical application of the knowledge students had gained in the classroom. By participating in actual flight operations, students developed a deeper understanding of aviation concepts and gained valuable insights into what it takes to become a pilot.
A Step Toward Future Careers
Sturgeon Composite High School's Aviation - Flight 15 program offers more than just classroom instruction—it provides students with a pathway to explore potential careers in aviation. At this level, students begin working toward meeting the standards and requirements necessary to obtain a private pilot’s license, laying the groundwork for future opportunities in the industry.
Looking Ahead
As the program continues, students can look forward to more hands-on activities, field trips, and specialized learning experiences that will further fuel their passion for aviation. The Aviation - Flight 15 program is a prime example of how Sturgeon Public Schools is committed to providing innovative educational opportunities that prepare students for the future.
For the budding aviators at Sturgeon Composite High, the sky truly is the limit!
